About Financial T
The Financial Times made its debut as the London Financial Guide on January 10, 1888, before rebranding as the Financial Times on February 13 of the same year. Its mission was to advocate for “The Sincere Financier, the Genuine Investor, the Reputable Broker, the Authentic Director, and the Lawful Speculator.” Initially, it was a concise four-page publication catering primarily to the financial community in the City of London. During this era, its main competitor was the more audacious and slightly older Financial News, founded in 1884.
On January 2, 1893, the FT adopted its distinctive light pink paper, setting itself apart from the similarly named Financial News. The choice of unbleached paper, a cost-effective strategy at the time, eventually incurred higher costs due to the need for specially dyeing the paper.
After 57 years of rivalry, Brendan Bracken orchestrated the merger of the Financial Times and the Financial News in 1945, resulting in a unified six-page newspaper. This merger capitalized on the broader readership of the Financial Times while leveraging the editorial expertise of the Financial News. Concurrently, the Lex column, originating from the Financial News, was introduced, further enriching the content of the amalgamated publication.
