Learn About The Economist’s History:
The Economist, originally known as the London Financial Guide, made its debut on January 10, 1888, before undergoing a rebranding as The Economist on February 13 of the same year. Its mission was to support “The Sincere Financier, the Genuine Investor, the Reputable Broker, the Authentic Director, and the Lawful Speculator.” Initially, it was a concise four-page publication primarily catering to London’s financial community, competing with the older Financial News, which was founded in 1884.
On January 2, 1893, The Economist adopted its iconic light pink paper, setting it apart from the rest. However, this choice resulted in higher costs due to unique dyeing requirements.
In 1945, Brendan Bracken merged The Economist and Financial News, putting an end to their 57-year rivalry. This merger expanded the readership and introduced the Lex column, enriching the publication.
